i’m on s9 of spn rewatch and upon initial watch when i was in my teens i thought Dean was incomprehensible just because he was “older” but now that im basically the SAME AGE AS HIM? holy shit it’s not even midwestern garble like literally half the shit he says requires a translator. like. no wonder Cas will look him in the EYES and be like “i have no idea what you are saying to me.”
Sam understands him in the same way that twins have their own secret language. they grew up together in such close quarters, and they were taught military jargon shorthand anyway- and then the only other half of Dean’s ENTIRE life is what he watched on the motel TV.
seriously, I was born in ‘95 and he speaks a string of words and sentences that make me pause and rewind the show with a minimum of two 90s pop culture references and i guess, “hunter” slang, and I’m like what the FUCK did you say to me???? i beg your fucking pardon???
to expand upon this, Bobby is EXACTLY the same way!! and his references are older, but just as accurate. honestly. some of their deep-dive references are not just to whatever’s popular on TV and in the movies in the 90’s; it’s major literary influences, scholars, and poets accross decades. Dean jokes that he doesn’t read, yet he mentions Tolstoy. I’m losing my mind.

actually i think the actual main issue i have with supernatural is how sam and dean treated kevin tran. like what the fuck actually. they never once deserved his respect or loyalty ! they abandoned him, took him for granted and treated him (and his mother!!) as expendable like what the HEEEELLLLLL
